MISSION       :-The mission of the library is to acquire to organize, to utilize and to preserve the information sources and to extend effective and efficient service to the students, research scholars and faculty members of the college.

VISION          :-Mount Carmel college library and Information Centre will serve as a centre of intense intellectual inquiry and provide most dynamic learning environment including focusing an user’s needs, enabling  users to become information literate, acquiring and organizing information resources and acting as a guide to information utilizing  traditional formats and modern technology.


The objectives of Mount Carmel College library are:
1. To serve students, faculty members of our institute with required information resources to meet their academic needs.
2. To acquire, maintain and disseminate relevant information in College library users.
3. To provide accurate and the latest knowledge to members for study and teaching purpose.
4. To enhance academic activities of Mount Carmel College by providing a comfortable reading environment for learning and study.

         MOUNT CARMEL COLLEGE LIBRARY is equipped with all the modern facilities for a College library, like Online information zone, Electronic Resource Centre (ERC), Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), Digital Library, Reprographic facilities N-LIST, DELNET etc.this library serves as an Information Centre not only for the faculty, researchers and students of the Mount Carmel College but also to the other scientific and research institutions around the city of letters. We have a collection of 18644 books, 25 periodicals including current titles in the field of education apart from 520 back volumes, 564 theses and 665 educational CD ROMS, 61000 E-Books, 3100 E-Journals,5 Newspapers and blessed with a devoted team of professionals to the guide an users with all recent information. The Library functions 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and from 10 to 4pm during weekends.

     Mount Carmel College Library adopts RFID Technology

            The Mount Carmel library in Kottayam, home of nearly 20,000 books, theses and other items, has adopted radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to identify and manage a big chunk of its large collection. The reliability of the system, its ease of operations and the flexibility of tagging all kinds of media easily are important in the library environment. Using RFID, the library is finding misplaced books more quickly, maximizing floor space with frequently requested    items and streamlining the inventory process, the inventory checking is very easy and time saving. The library extended the system to access control, loan management and issuing- tagged badges to staff and students. RFID is used in this library for circulation operations and theft detection systems etc. The RFID system also acts as tracking systems that combine security and including easier and faster charge and discharge, inventorying and materials handling.


At present, the library is functioning in a total floor space of 4613 the first floor of the building of the Mount Carmel College. Journal/Periodical section, Electronic Information Center, Reference Section, Reading Room etc are functioning in one part and Circulation Section, Processing Unit, Stack area are functioning in second part of the library.

Organization and administration of the library

The library is an institution, which accumulates the knowledge and transmits the same to the public and explores the new knowledge. It is the back born of any education institution and hence it requires an efficient organization to serve its readers in dissemination of knowledge. The activities of even two individuals require co-ordination and co-operation to be effective and efficient. Administration of Mount Carmel College Library is well structured and knit together to fulfill its objectives and aims of its parent organization. The Principal, Librarian, Library Assistants, Technical assistants and other staff members in the library support the library activities.

   The provision to open the library on Sunday and holiday is made for special circumstances such as examination preparation, workshop organize etc.

 The research scholars’ of outside university is allowed to use and library with the special consideration.

       The library has an Institutional membership base of 180 (including 120 B.Ed students, 35 M.Ed students and 25 faculty members). The B.Ed students are eligible to borrow three books at a time for a period of 14 days. M.Ed students can borrow 5 books and staff can borrow 10 books at a time for a period of 30 days. Apart from the institutional members, Non-institutional people i.e. teachers, research scholars and students of the neighboring educational institution also utilize the library for reference.
